I would like to ask the administrators of this page for your support and you could also post this notification. The Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul (FZB) is a Brazilian institution of teaching and research that houses many biological and fossil specimens. Many of the fossil specimens in its collections have been described and studied, appearing in many high impact publications, along with holotypes, such as the pseudosuchian archosaur (‘Rauisuchian’) Decuriasuchus quartacolonia, the cynodonts Riograndia gauibensis and Santacruzodon hopsoni ( ‘ancestors’ to mammals) and the Triassic dinosaurs Sacisaurus agudensis and Guaibasaurus candelariensis. Recently, the government of the Rio Grande do Sul State has begun to implement projects to cut costs due to a recession. One of these projects is the closing of the FZB, eliminating all of its projects funding and scientific research along with firing of all of its staff! This will basically eliminate an institution with ~40 years of contribution science endeavor not only in the field of paleontology but of all natural science and conservation efforts in this region. Logically, this has resulted in an uproar by the Brazilian scientific community, along with many colleagues from South America and other parts of the world. If possible, I would like to ask the members of this page to sign the petition that we will be sending to the government this week to try to stop this travesty.
